Year 7 and 8 Learning Programme @ WFPS

Our aim is to deliver an innovative learning programme that is tailored to the individual needs of our students. In our unique context we are able to make the most of our Outdoor Learning Area to ensure students have a challenging and authentic context for learning.

Our learning to learn model ensures students are developing highly efficient inquiry skills which prepares them for high school. All learning and experiences are focused on developing:
  • Resilience
  • Curiosity
  • Problem Solving
  • Critical Thinking
  • Reflection

Mathematics

@WFPS we believe students need to develop the knowledge and strategies to enable them to confidently solve mathematical problems in everyday life.

Skills and knowledge in Algebra, Number, Statistics, Geometry and Measurement are all developed.
All students are provided with a Mathletics account which is in part funded by our PTA.

English

Shared / Guided and Independent Writing.
Students have a clear purpose for writing, we provide opportunity for children to develop an understanding of knowledge and how texts are shaped for different audiences.
Reading
As children move into Year 7 and 8 much of the focus is on reading to learn as opposed to learning to read. Students who require support receive additional support.
Speaking and Listening
Oral communication is integrated across the curriculum. Students at WFPS are confident communicators in a range of contexts. The students are given the opportunity to develop formal speech skills and compete against students from other schools.

William Pike Challenge Award
The William Pike Challenge Award is a flexible & easy to follow framework. Students in year 7  and 8 take part in the William Pike Challenge Award over the school year and are required to engage in outdoor activities, community service and passion projects.

UNITEC conducted independent research into the William Pike Challenge Award and found that it teaches young people vital life skills. Read more about their findings in our blog.

All students who finish the William Pike Challenge Award get three months taken off their Duke of Edinburgh Hillary Award Bronze major!

Education outside the classroom is an integral part of the learning programme @WFPS. We are lucky to have daily access to:
Outdoor learning Area
Kingswood Bush
Garden Gurus
In addition, students are regularly making field trips where there is a genuine opportunity to learn in a more authentic environment. Recent curriculum review has highlighted the importance of learning in such contexts and as a school we will ensure our local curriculum reflects the interests of our students whilst growing their capacity to understand and be effective in the global context.
